In certain cases, a homeowner will evaluate their floor plan and find great places to replace hinged doors with pocket doors. However, frequently they run into problems when the wall they want to put the pocket door contains a light switch, an outlet, or water pipes (like to a shower head). How To Install A Pocket Door

pocket door installation videoInstalling a pocket door is not a difficult do-it-yourself project. Unless you are an experienced carpenter, however, I would recommend using a pocket door kit instead of trying to do it from scratch. As you found in your old dorm, if something is slightly out of line or warped, a pocket door can be difficult to open and close.

New installation of pocket door frame)Ok while reading directions on door hanger install kit. It says to install the hanger plates on the top of the door at 7/8ths from edge of door. Ok so I grab my tape measure and hold the plate @ 7/8ths from edge of door. Then i measure from edge of door to the center of the plate( to where the pin will insert at,2-3/4") now transfer this measurement to the actual door frame and it looks to me like the one set of rollers will drop off the track! Or at least two wheels will. is this intentional to maybe make the door kinda rest at the closed position? The track at the top stops short of the side door frame by about 2-1/2". Does anybody understand what I’m talking about.

Pocket doors slide on rails and disappear inside a wall rather than swinging on hinges. There is nothing special about the door itself and most any door can be installed as a pocket door. The pocket door hardware and pocket door frame kit is what distinguishes this type of door from others. Rollers are fastened to the top of the door slab. They slide on a metal track that extends back into the wall the same width as the door. The pocket door frame kit is what creates the hollow cavity in the wall for the door to slide into. In new construction projects the pocket door frame must be installed before the drywall is applied to the walls in the room.

Along with its billing as a space saving door, pocket doors can be utilized in problem situations where a standard swinging door will not work. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and closets are typically areas where problems might occur. You may have a half bath, with no space for a door to swing in and no clearance to swing out, or a closet where an open door would be in the way, becoming an obstacle you do not want to deal with. In either case, installing a pocket door unit is a practical solution. Pocket doors can really convey a sense of openness. Installing them is easy; however, there are a few things to consider that can help make your installation proceed smoothly. First of all, depending on the height of the ceiling and the presence of a support beam directly above your planned door opening, you may have to raise the header in order to install a 6" 8" door. Check with your local building department if you are unable to fit in a full 6" 8" door size as there may be some local code requirements. bathroom door signs

My pocket door kit came from Lowe’s and cost me about $70. It included a frame that goes inside the wall to make space for the door, a header with a roller track from which the door will hang, and a door jamb. It also had all of the hardware needed to hang the door from the track (two rollers and two hangers). It did not include the nails needed to put the kit together or to attach it to the studs and floor. I re-used the louvered door that was originally on the other side of our utility room, so I was spared the cost of buying a new door. There will be some elbow-grease involved in refinishing it, though.

Pocket Door Magic – Electrical Switches And Outlets Near The Door

If you have found the most perfect flush pulls for your bedroom or bathroom door you can add pocket door jamb bolts for privacy locking. The jamb bolt is installed on the inside of the pocket door and operates like a rocker switch, physically preventing the door from returning to the pocket. There is a strike plate included that attaches to the door jamb to protect it from damage, as well as trim for an emergency release hole for outside the door in case someone accidentally gets locked inside.

This is a handy device for use as a privacy lock on pocket or sliding doors that do not have a lock installed. This pocket door jamb bolt is designed to be face mounted at the rear of a closed pocket door, acts as a privacy bolt to prevent door from opening. It works like a rocker switch. When pushed in, the other half pops out, physically preventing the door from returning into its pocket. For emergency access a small hole can be drilled through the door and a slim object can be inserted through the hole to flip the rocker closed. Made of solid brass and available in 7 popular finishes.

Sometimes the trim moulding is installed very close to the door. This gives you a very clean look, but it doesn’t allow much space for the pocket door pulls to clear the trim moulding when sliding the door in and out of the wall pocket. Most pocket door pulls will only require 3/32" clearance on both side of the door, however some will require 1/8" or more on both sides. Check the hardware’s specified projection (how far it sticks off the door’s face) to insure it can clear any existing trim mouldings

Once the frame is installed you drywall over the frame. Make sure you use short screws so that the screws don’t penetrate the frame and create a barrier for the door to slide. Next you’ll want to trim the door opening. You’ll need to install a narrow piece of jamb trim on each side of the door and also on the top (see the photo below). One of the pieces of jamb trim on the top will need to be easy to remove. If your door comes off the track the only way to re-install the door is to remove the trim so you can lift the door back on the track. If you notice in the photo we used some trim screws to attach one piece of the upper jamb trim.

You can attach drywall to the frame, if you"d like, smooth and finish the wall and seams. Never use nails when installing a pocket door, as nails in the wall will impede the door’s flow. If you’ve purchased a door handle and lock for your pocket door, install the lock according to the instructions on the package. If you have an uncut doorframe, you will need to use a chisel to cut a depth for the locking mechanism. Follow the instructions on the package to do so.
